The city of Seattle has started something truly special by becoming the first city in the nation to divest their bank accounts and investments from Wells Fargo - one of the most unjust, unethical banks in American history.

Simply put, America's banks are financing and profiting off injustice - ranging from the Dakota Access Pipeline to private prisons and systems of mass incarceration.

Whether we know it or not, we are funding our own oppression and financing the very systems we despise. While each of us can decide where we bank, city governments, public institutions, colleges and universities give hundreds of billions of dollars to the very banks who refuse to be ethical and socially responsible.

City governments, public institutions, colleges and universities have a responsibility to ensure that they partner with ethical financial institutions whose true values line up with their own.
